What to do to get in shape for lacrosse this spring?

by on December 28, 2010

I’m looking for some things I can do over the winter to get in shape for lacrosse season.
Like should I focus on upper body or lower body? Or just running a lot? Just some general direction… Not necessarily skill drills like wall ball, just things that would help get me back in shape and strengthen myself.

lots of running! its the fastest game on 2 feet. you need to be able to run fast. and upper and lower body strengthening. do lots of benching and pushups for arms and squats and lunges for legs. just about everything you can think of.

The best answer i can give u is plyometric exercises, and running/cardio. They increase strength, agility, and endurance, and will help keep u from getting injured, by strengthening muscles as well as surrounding joints and ligaments. Plyometric body weight exercises are what i have my team do in the off season, and even more so during pre-season. Push-ups, pull-ups, one-legged/two-legged squat jumps, walking lunges, sit-ups and/or crunches, wind sprints, shuttle runs, lots of work with exercise balls, and medicine balls to strengthen the core. Also, skill drills r hugely important in the off season to keep stick skills sharp. Forearm and grip strength exercises r also great for improving stick control, as well as shot strength. U don’t necessarily need to lift weights to get in shape for lax, but if u do, go for lower weight, higher volume during workouts, strength is great, but speed, endurance, and agility r the cornerstones of a great lax player.
